What Will We Do With Our Free Power?

"I simply cannot believe where we are with solar," says Jenny Chase, the BloombergNEF analyst and quite possibly the person in the world who knows the most about the business of turning the light of the sun into electricity. "And if you'd told me nearly 20 years ago what would be the case now, 20 years later," she continues, "I would have just said you were crazy. I would have laughed in your face. There is genuinely a revolution happening." By just 2030, Chase estimates, solar power will be absolutely and reliably free during the sunny parts of the day for much of the year "pretty much everywhere."

In 2023, the world installed 444 gigawatts of new solar photovoltaic capacity, according to BloombergNEF. While that figure can be hard for normie brains to process, it represents a staggering step forward: nearly an 80 percent year-on-year jump and more than was cumulatively installed between the invention of the solar cell in 1954 and 2017. Although solar power still provides just under 6 percent of global electricity, its share has nearly quadrupled since 2018, an exponential curve that is expected to continue for some time.

"When it was a 10th of its current size 10 years ago, solar power was still seen as marginal even by experts who knew how fast it had grown," The Economist noted in a recent cover story. "The next tenfold increase will be equivalent to multiplying the world's entire fleet of nuclear reactors by eight in less than the time it typically takes to build just a single one of them." By the 2030s — not very long from now — solar power will most likely be the largest source of electricity on the planet.

Even more remarkable than the scale is the cost. By one measure, the cost of solar power is less than one-thousandth of what it was when hippies and environmentalists first made a point of installing panels on their roofs in the 1960s. A decade ago, it was considered a moonshot goal to reduce the price of a solar module to a dollar per watt; now they are being manufactured for one-tenth as much. The price fell by nearly half in 2023 alone...

Sustainable Campus applications due Sep 27

In the fall of 2006, students voted to put in place a Clean Energy Fee to support campus sustainability projects. A university committee administers the funds generated by this fee. Applications are now being accepted for project proposals for 2024-2025.  Below is a set of guidelines used to determine a project’s funding eligibility:

 

Projects and proposals should focus primarily on:

 

  • Renewable Energy
  • Energy Conservation/Efficiency
  • Alternative Fuels
  • Sustainable Design

 

Eligible spending may include:

 

  • On-site generation projects that utilize and publicize renewable energy technologies; such as solar array displays on campus;
  • Opportunities that may arise to gain additional funding or offset costs through rebate programs, such as the Generation Partners Program provided by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) and Murfreesboro Electric.
  • Up to 10% of the total annual appropriations may be used for research grants, as well as academic programs for educational, training, and research purposes, to help develop awareness of energy use, consumption, and conservation to be awarded within the MTSU community.

My short answer to those two questions:

  • I'm the teacher, and have been doing this at MTSU for about a quarter century. 
  • I'm here because, like my favorite philosopher William James (1842-1910), I believe in philosophy devoutly and because I agree with him that "the really vital question for us all is, what is this world going to be? What is life going to make of itself?" We don't know the answer, but we do know that any answer we'd ever want to hear will depend on our successfully sustaining a habitable world on this planet

Is A.I. Making Mothers Obsolete?

…The novel [Hum] takes place in a dystopian world that is at once recognizable and subtly different from our own. Climate change has devastated the environment. ("If only the forests hadn't burned," May thinks. "If only it wasn't so hard, so expensive, getting out of the city, getting beyond the many rings of industry and blight.") Cameras and screens are as omnipresent as the pollution in the air; privacy, access to nature, and freedom from advertising have become luxury goods. Many jobs have been automated, including May's. Previously employed by a company that developed "the communicative abilities of artificial intelligence," May was laid off after unwittingly training an A.I. network that made her obsolete. Her husband, Jem, a former photographer, is keeping them afloat as a gig worker, emptying mousetraps and cleaning out closets. The couple's anxiety about the future has filtered down to their children, the eight-year-old Lu and six-year-old Sy, who are shown doting on a cockroach, obsessing over disaster-preparedness manuals, and rejoicing at flavorless strawberries. The kids fill their insomniac parents with love and fear. "What will this planet hold for them by the time they're our age?" May and Jem ask, clutching each other in bed...

Why do you say that?

We waste a lot of time uselessly. We can live more peacefully. Take Uruguay. Uruguay has 3.5 million people. It imports 27 million pairs of shoes. We make garbage and work in pain. For what?

You're free when you escape the law of necessity — when you spend the time of your life on what you desire. If your needs multiply, you spend your life covering those needs.

Humans can create infinite needs. The market dominates us, and it robs us of our lives.

Humanity needs to work less, have more free time and be more grounded. Why so much garbage? Why do you have to change your car? Change the refrigerator?

There is only one life and it ends. You have to give meaning to it. Fight for happiness, not just for wealth.

Do you believe that humanity can change?

It could change. But the market is very strong. It has generated a subliminal culture that dominates our instinct. It's subjective. It's unconscious. It has made us voracious buyers. We live to buy. We work to buy. And we live to pay. Credit is a religion. So we're kind of screwed up...

How Close Are the Planet’s Climate Tipping Points?

Earth's warming could trigger sweeping changes in the natural world that would be hard, if not impossible, to reverse.

Right now, every moment of every day, we humans are reconfiguring Earth's climate bit by bit. Hotter summers and wetter storms. Higher seas and fiercer wildfires. The steady, upward turn of the dial on a host of threats to our homes, our societies and the environment around us.

We might also be changing the climate in an even bigger way.

For the past two decades, scientists have been raising alarms about great systems in the natural world that warming, caused by carbon emissions, might be pushing toward collapse. These systems are so vast that they can stay somewhat in balance even as temperatures rise. But only to a point.

Once we warm the planet beyond certain levels, this balance might be lost, scientists say. The effects would be sweeping and hard to reverse. Not like the turning of a dial, but the flipping of a switch. One that wouldn't be easily flipped back...

Can words help us out of climate despair and toward repair?

…The Symbiocene. Inspired by the Greek symbiosis, or "living with," the Symbiocene was also dreamed up by Albrecht. 

"The idea of the Symbiocene stimulates all humans to create a future where positive Earth emotions will prevail over the negative," Albrecht wrote.

Albrecht believes that "positive Earth emotions" ought to define the next era of human and Earth history, making it a time of mutual benefit between humans and planetary systems. As an imagined epoch, the Symbiocene doesn't blame all humans for climate change, nor does it indulge our sense of fatalism and helplessness. The Symbiocene hints at an imagined future. But it also captures something that has always existed: Humanity, not at the center of existence, but as part of a system that's interconnected, dependent, responsible — to other species, to ecosystems, to life.

Are We Thinking About the Youth Mental Health Crisis All Wrong?

Global trends in economics, climate and technology are weighing on young adults, a report finds. It recommends overhauling how we approach mental health care.

...Climate worry is also becoming a more common complaint. Online searches for subjects related to climate anxiety have surged. Professionals have created peer support groups, an online directory of climate-aware therapists, and certification programs in climate psychology.

Michael, 38, who is using his middle name to protect his privacy, said that his anxiety over the state of the environment began when he was in his early 30s and he has since sought therapy to treat it.

"It seems like there's no care whatsoever for the world around us," said Michael, who lives in Baltimore. Small things, like seeing fleets of trucks delivering items to people's homes or trash in the waterways, make him feel angry or fearful about the future. The "reckless abandon" is "very hard to deal with," he added...

We’re Applying Lessons From Covid to Bird Flu. That’s Not Good.

…Undeniably, the country is in a different place regarding the risks from Covid than it was two or three or four years ago, and it is perfectly justifiable that many Americans are less interested in hearing about Covid than they were then. Perhaps it is also natural to not want to hear about public health matters at all — the previous years were difficult and painful, after all. But to believe that means we should pass laws discouraging individuals from taking precautions, or to choose not to pursue surveillance measures to actually track the progress of a new disease threat, is a deeply pathological response to an experience of pandemic trauma, and one that implies it is more problematic to remind those around us of ongoing health risks than to take action to limit them. We seem to have memory-holed not just the suffering of Covid-19 but also the initial burst of inspiring if imperfect solidarity it produced, preferring instead to embrace the "bipartisan" indifference our pandemic tribalism ultimately yielded to. Thankfully, bird flu isn't making us pay for it — yet.

Earth Church

'Earthalujah!': A Rebel Pastor Preaches for the Planet

As part of its crusade against consumerism, an unorthodox New York church urges action to preserve the Earth.

...Mr. Talen went on to sermonize about things not generally heard from pulpits. About mounting warnings from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the scientific body created by the United Nations. About record high temperatures, melting ice sheets and skyrocketing concentrations of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. About torrential downpours intensified by heat that seemed less like rain, and more like midair waterfalls.

Outside, New York City was baking. The temperature was 91 degrees Fahrenheit but felt like 106. A block away, down East Third Street, kids were dancing in the spray of an opened fire hydrant. Inside the storefront space, which used to house a bank, a sclerotic air-conditioning system was losing its battle with the heat. The air felt as hot as breath.

"This proto apocalypse that we're living through, it's moving so fast and changing so fast that a lot of what's happening doesn't have names," Mr. Talen continued. "We're living through it but not talking about it."

Then, sensing the need for levity, he cried out, "Someone give me an Earthalujah!"

Maria Popova again has me thinking this (like its predecessor "Overstory") would be a good text for Environmental Ethics. Bioethics too.

How 'Twisters' Failed Us and Our Burning Planet

"… I'm not arguing that Mr. Chung should have turned his 122 minutes of beautifully rendered cinematic escapism into an Anthropocene screed. But artifacts of popular culture have always had immense power to articulate changing attitudes, engage empathy and open firmly resistant minds. Think about how swiftly Rachel Carson's "Silent Spring" changed attitudes toward the fragile natural world and led to new regulations of synthetic pesticides, or how Joni Mitchell's "Big Yellow Taxi" and John Prine's "Paradise" expanded awareness of the environmental movement. A decade ago, the CBS drama "Madam Secretary" proved that even a single episode with a climate-based story line could significantly affect viewers' understanding of the human costs of climate change.

This is why Percy Bysshe Shelley called poets "the unacknowledged legislators of the world." When art changes opinions or opens hearts, it changes the world as profoundly as any legislation does.

With MAGA politicians at every level denying that climate change even exists, real climate legislation is now nearly impossible to pass. And with the Supreme Court determined to quash all executive-branch efforts to address the changing climate, too, we seem to be at the mercy of artists to save us.

If only they would. In a missed opportunity the size of an F5 tornado's debris field, we got no help from the makers of 'Twisters.'"

The world just experienced its hottest day ever measured by humans – and then, it happened again. After climate change service Copernicus measured July 21 as the hottest day ever recorded, the temperature was smashed a day later on Monday.

"…I recently went looking for the grasslands restoration projects newly established at Radnor Lake State Natural Area and Warner Parks, both in Nashville. With the spring wildflowers already bloomed out and the fall wildflowers still setting buds, July is not the ideal time to visit a grassland restoration site, but I was thinking about the buffalo — that magnificent creature we nearly drove into extinction but saved at the last minute — and I wanted to see some of the many restoration projects that are springing up here as awareness of what this landscape is meant to look like continues to grow..."

Conceived by the British scientist and inventor James Lovelock in the 1960s and later developed with the American biologist Lynn Margulis, the Gaia hypothesis proposes that all the animate and inanimate elements of Earth are "parts and partners of a vast being who in her entirety has the power to maintain our planet as a fit and comfortable habitat for life."

Lovelock published his first book on Gaia in 1979 amid a growing environmental movement. Although his ideas found an enthusiastic audience among the public, many scientists criticized and ridiculed them. Those who bristled at the notion typically made the same protestations: Earth cannot be alive because it does not eat, grow, reproduce or evolve through natural selection like "real" living things.

Yet there has never been an objective measure or a universally accepted definition of life. There are numerous examples of things we con­sider inanimate that have traits of the living and vice versa. Life is more spectral than categorical, more verb than noun. Life is not a distinct class of matter but rather a process — a performance. Life is something matter does.

Although sci­ence has not yet arrived at a fundamental explanation of the phenomenon we call life, many experts in the past century have favored a variation of the following: Life is a system that sustains itself. This defining capacity for active self-preservation and self-regulation emerges at many different scales: at the scale of the cell, the organism, the ecosystem and, I would argue, the planet.

Gaia still retains something of a stigma in mainstream science, but in recent decades opposition has waned significantly. Although the claim that Earth itself is a living entity remains contro­versial, some scientists embrace it, and others are increasingly open to it. The idea that life transforms the planet and is intertwined with its self-regulatory processes has become a central tenet of mainstream Earth-system science, a relatively young field that explicitly studies the living and nonliving components of the planet as an integrated whole. As the Earth-system scientist Tim Lenton has written, he and his colleagues "now think in terms of the coupled evolution of life and the planet, recognizing that the evolution of life has shaped the planet, changes in the planetary environment have shaped life, and together they can be viewed as one process."

Like many living things, Earth absorbs, stores and transforms en­ergy. Earth has a body with organized structures, membranes and daily rhythms. From the raw elements of our planet have emerged zillions of biological entities that ceaselessly devour, transfigure and replenish its rock, water and air. Such organisms do not simply reside on Earth; they are literal extensions of Earth. Moreover, organisms and their en­vironments are inextricably bonded in reciprocal evolution, often converging upon self-stabilizing processes that favor mutual persis­tence. Collectively, these processes endow Earth with a kind of plan­etary physiology: with breath, metabolism, a regulated temperature and a balanced chemistry. Earth is not a single organism or a product of standard Darwinian evolution, but it is nonetheless a genuine living entity, a vast interconnected living system.

One early metaphor Lovelock deployed to explain Gaia was a redwood tree. Only a few parts of a tree contain living cells, namely the leaves and thin layers of tissue within the trunk, branches and roots. The rest is dead wood. Similarly, the bulk of our planet is inanimate rock, wrapped in a flowering skin of life. Just as strips of living tissue are essential to keep a whole tree alive, Earth's living skin helps sustain a kind of global being. What Lovelock did not realize at the time, however, was that even Earth's seemingly inert skeleton of rock was far more porous and alive than most people believed...

Recycling Is Broken. Should I Even Bother?

Every little bit helps. But doing it wrong can actually make matters worse.

...When you do buy things, consider whether you can recycle the packaging. When choosing drinks, metal containers are generally better than plastics. When you shop online, you can sometimes ask for less packaging, as with Amazon's "frustration-free" option. And remember the first two Rs: reduce and reuse.

Although these are small things you can do, the reality is that recycling's challenges are systemic.

So, is it worth the effort?

In theory, every item you recycle can keep resources in the ground, avoid greenhouse gases and help keep the environment healthy. And that's all good.

"The value is in displacing virgin materials," said Reid Lifset, a research scholar at Yale's School of the Environment.

But here's the critical part: Don't wish-cycle.

Follow the instructions provided by your local hauler. If you throw in stuff they don't want, the effort needed to weed it out makes it less likely that anything will get recycled at all. nyt
