Being from The Bahamas, I thought it was necessary to share some common problems that we face on our islands. We had cases of many species going endangered, some extinct, due to over fishing. I would expect this to happen because many people on the island, especially the family island depend on selling fish for a living. Our latest problem that we face is the depletion of conch in areas where they are usually in abundance. We are now considering having an open and closed season on this Bahamian delicacy because of the over-consumption. Many people disagree with this because this a very well liked mean down on the islands. The Bahamas National Trust did a mini presentation on when I went back home over the Christmas break. Here is a video that tells some stuff that they talked to about in their informational.

Thanks, Tiara. I presume the Bahamas are at greater risk of devastating economic impact from sea-level rise, which according to many forecasts is now likely to be sooner and greater than we'd anticipated. Lots of places will be in that situation. "Over-consumption" is a good word to summarize our planetary predicament - unfair as it is to those who've consumed and emitted less than the U.S.
ReplyDeleteWe are definitely at total risk for sea level rise. I did a powerpoint presentation on that and I noticed a lot of place that once had landscape is currently covered by water
DeleteAre there other possible solutions to conserve the conch populations in conjunction with open and closed seasons for consumption?
ReplyDeleteI dont think there are because its so high in demand among Bahamians. WE absolutly love the shell fish. The Nassau Grouper and Spiny Lobster now have a open and closed season because Bahamians love to eat it so much
DeleteIf you all decided to go forth with the closed seasons for consumption, what would that mean for the people that depended on them for their income? Do you think they would just find something else to sell causing that to go extinct as well?
