According to multiple experts Ocean temperatures have
been steadily rising due to our ever-increasing Greenhouse Gasses. There have several problems relating to our oceans
over the centuries from over-fishing to fertilizer run off, but the biggest
threat so far has been twofold. The
first being that traditionally the ocean has been a buffer from the trapped by
greenhouse gasses by absorbing 93 percent of the heat. This has caused ocean temperatures to
skyrocket which is affecting marine life and ecosystems as well rising sea
levels. already a fifth of all corals have died within the past
three years, but hardly anybody has noticed even. According to CBS
even the Great Coral Reefs, or the Great Barrier Reef, is dying due to climate
change even though the Australian Government are trying to help by committing
to a 2050
Long-Term plan, but whether or not this will help we will see. The second and more serious problem is ocean
acidification which is where the chemistry of the ocean is being changed due
to the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere.
This is a problem because it effects not only marine life, but also terrestrial
life as well as the ocean acidity does have a potential of not only traveling
up the food chain, but being compounded by it as well. The impact on marine life most severe as due
to ocean acidification fish become more sluggish and reproduce less often, which
directly impacts the fishing industry, the way this impacts the fishing
industry is mostly though is due to the low reproduction problem. Of course, there are ways to fix this, like
what Patrick said in his post about how we could use offshore fish farms or
aquapods.
I also posted Ed’s post as well as Patricks’s and I should have 23 points so far in this semester.
