DQ: Why do we take the oceans so much for granted?
I've always loved going to the beach. My favorite thing to do is stand right at the water's edge, sinking my feet in the sand as the water flows on and off the shore. Looking out into the wild waves of never-ending blue always reminds me just how small I am and how little I have seen of this beautiful world.
Underneath the ocean's surface is like another world altogether, from what I've seen in videos, at least. The creatures of the underworld certainly don't look much like us land animals, and they don't live by the same rules either. It's a floor that we can't walk on, a space that we can't breathe in, and the water isn't even safe to drink.
The ocean is full of mystery and danger. Compared to how many of us have flown high up in the sky, very few of us will ever venture very far down into the depths of the ocean. To us, the ocean is just the space between land, where everything that matters happens. The consequences of our actions, for now, are invisible and far too easy to ignore. It won't be long until the rising sea levels force us to finally notice 70% of the earth's surface in a meaningful way.
