Sunrise Movement - Will We Realize What Needs To Be Done?

I would say my generation is the most climate-conscious thus far. My only concern is that we may not be focused on the right types of solutions.

The Sunrise Movement is a political activist group that focuses on advancing political action toward climate change. They are targeting major fossil fuel organizations and shedding light on their power over our government. This is of the utmost importance. Fossil fuels are the main contributors to the downfall of our environment, and these organizations were aware of this as far back as forty years ago. however, despite knowing their destructive powers, these companies decided to keep growing, with no consideration of their detrimental effects on future generations. I appreciate how organizations such as the sunrise movement are focused on taking optical action against these businesses, unfortunately, taking down this target will not be sufficient enough to completely stop the situation.

Our entire economic system needs a change (I know I'm beating a dead horse, all my assignments harken back to this), and this change is more drastic than just investing in green energy. To begin with, our energy consumption would need to go down significantly. Green energy is notoriously less efficient than fossil fuels, and unless you live in a perpetually sunny plot of land next to a river, you can't completely rely on things like solar, hydro, and wind-derived energies. Things like household devices would need to have less of a hold on our lifestyles. Not everyone could have an electric car. Our economic system would no longer be able to focus on outgrowing its neighbors.

I'm hoping to see movements such as this integrate a new way of seeing the problem. I like the political flavor they contain, but this needs to be ramped up tenfold. We have been told it is our fault this is happening, that we as citizens are too greedy and lazy. But we were conditioned this way. We were trained from birth to crave that which we don't need because buying meaningless items is good for the economy. And now we are seeing billionaires making their companies "green" by reducing carbon emissions and recycling products, all in order to encourage us to buy more from them. What they are producing, whether there are net-zero emissions or not, still strips unreliable resources from the earth at staggering rates. All so that we can get a new iPhone with one extra camera lens added to the back. You don't need 5K video quality to film your cat, 1080p serves you fine. But this cultural conditioning is hard to detox out of our collective consciousness.

This is the Flag for Green Anarchism. They support Anti-capitalist movements for the sake of environmental stability.

I do appreciate their stance against fascism, but I would like to see this expanded to capitalism as a whole. I hope my generation will be the ones to overcome these Orwellian-big-brother cooperations which have been directing societies' libidinal energy towards consumption since the dawn of the industrial revolution. I don't see those at the top of the hierarchy giving this up easily, there are tons of pro-capitalist currents running through my generation's culture, like some kind of final ploy to maintain control. Usually, these pro-capitalism ideologies are accompanied by more traditional anti-progressive ideologies, like the promotion of violence towards the LGBTQ community. We need to confront these positions and realize how seducing they are to certain demographics (for example, Jordan Peterson calling all progressive movements "Post-modern Neo-Marxisms" and convincing young white men that there is a secret cabal of gay people trying to bring back gulags).

  1. Let's hope the horse is not dead yet. You've articulated a perspective not unlike that of Naomi Klein, an author I admire: The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism... This Changes Everything: Capitalism vs. The Climate... On Fire: The Case for the Green New Deal...

"On Fire shows Klein at her most prophetic and philosophical, investigating the climate crisis not only as a profound political challenge but also as a spiritual and imaginative one. Delving into topics ranging from the clash between ecological time and our culture of “perpetual now,” to the soaring history of humans changing and evolving rapidly in the face of grave threats, to rising white supremacy and fortressed borders as a form of “climate barbarism,” this is a rousing call to action for a planet on the brink... sees the battle for a greener world as indistinguishable from the fight for our lives, On Fire captures the burning urgency of the climate crisis, as well as the fiery energy of a rising political movement demanding a catalytic Green New Deal."
