Each item in the list is valid but in my experience if it doesn't affect the individual or their immediate family they don't devote much thought to it. It takes something like a catastrophic event like a 9/11 or a Katrina, but even those only capture the national attention for a short while. How many people really reacted with outrage at what happened in Flint MI or just shook their heads and said well it doesn't affect me? And honestly I lump myself in with everybody else. I had planned to at least send a donation, but I never got around to it and I'm someone who at least took the time to learn about what happened, so what excuse do I have - None.
But you're already on the side of those who want to create a better world, rather than those who always want to know what's in it for them personally. So, cut yourself some slack! As for the rest of us, that cartoon ought to make us squirm.
