I would say the single overarching lesson would be Never
underestimate the power of people coming together to face a crisis. It can seem like the problem is too vast and
too out of our individual control, but humans as a species have faced crises since
the very beginning, and the solution almost always lies in cooperation and
helping each other. People have come
together in protest movements to address social and political issues many times
in the last 100 years, including the recent protests. Whenever a natural disaster happens, like
the tornadoes in Nashville or massive hurricanes, people always volunteer
to rescue people and help clean up. Many Nations
have come together to create the Paris Climate Accord, but we need rejoin, as
well as keep that international cooperation going. It can’t be just a symbolic act, we have to
keep pushing for more action, at home and abroad. With the US being a main offender, we need to be proactive in our own country to raise public awareness and support for green
energy and fight misinformation about climate change. This is a universal crisis, and we have to
work together to fight for the future of the world we all inhabit.

Your post is just the inspiring words I feel like so many need to hear. Myself included. Its hard to imagine people coming together right now considering how torn apart our country seems to be at the moment, however that must mean its the perfect time for people to come together. I share your hopes of us rejoining the Paris climate accord and liked how you acknowledge that it is more than an act and that it requires continuation in fighting for what is right.
ReplyDeleteYou're right, when people historically have perceived a shared crisis and common threat they've pulled together and unified. They've agreed on the facts, and proceeded to find solutions. Our problem now is Stage 1, a shared acknowledgement of the fact of existentially-threatening climate change. Removing Deniers from positions of power and influence is an important and crucial step in the right direction. (Deactivating Trump's social media accounts would help too!)
