I would definitely say that theaters , museums and libraries would play a preservation role on future generations to come. History needs to be preserved and taken care of in order for History to be preserved. The Environment can control the preservation Books and artifacts by slowing down the deterioration speed. We need to give a better understanding and appreciation of the value of these institutions so that they can continue to give us what we need.
Cultural institutions that externalize our collective memory are so important, for education and (as you say) preservation-not merely preservation of history and memory but of our sustained commitment to sustainable values and practices.
