A Discussion Question

  • Is it appropriate to vilify James Watt for inventing the steam engine? Can we blame him somewhat for the environmental problems of today?

  1. I don't think that we can blame him. He didn't know when he invented the steam engine, that it would cause so many problems. The people of his time had no idea the effects it would have. I think that as we revealed the effects and realized how detrimental burning coal was, that we should have taken it upon ourselves to find better, cleaner energies.

  2. I agree it is not his fault. He did open a can of worms that the world was not able to handle but it is not all his fault. We should have started researching and developing cleaner energy sources from the start.

  3. Although we can not blame him entirely, he is somewhat responsible for the dirty energy problems we face today.

  4. I also agree that he is not to blame. At that time we didn't have the technology available to research what was happening to our environment. We wouldn't be where we are with transportation and shipped goods. I think that when James Watt invented the steam engine he knew that we were innovative enough to invent new technologies that were safer and more efficient than his when the time came.
