Costa Rica Powered by 100% Renewable Energy for 76 Days

I noticed this article while browsing Reddit, and its an interesting read. Of course the article mentions that Costa Rica is a vastly different scenario than the United States, but it's still inspiring.

  1. This is awesome T-Rex. A couple of years ago I worked with a young man whose family lives in Costa Rica and I will share this with him. I hope to visit there sometime and stay for a few weeks to improve my Spanish speaking skills. He said that they are very welcoming to individuals who want to do that and it's a beautiful country with lots of diverse flowers and fauna.

  3. In the article it also said that last year it powered itself without oil natural gas or coal for 299 days. While its a small nation about half the size of Kentucky it stated, that is still a magnificent feat.

While it may not be plausible for the bigger countries to go this route, I think this could serve as inspiration to individual cities that this is possible. If cities themselves took this approach and took their grids back then it would make the task of converting the country that much more achievable in a shorter term. Even though they were lucky to get about 93 percent of the renewables from hydro and geothermal and this isn't possible throughout the world, it could still serve as inspiration and a real world model that it is possible to run entirely on renewables once finding what works for you.
