Pipeline rupture in Alabama

Something hitting close to home impacting us
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2016/sep/16/alabama-gasoline-pipeline-spill-fuel-shortages-emergency

This article is about the gas pipeline rupture in Alabama that is impacting southern states

Just wanted to point out the fact that they were "lucky" the spill all drained into a nearby mining retention pond which is good news that the draining into the pond spared the Cahaba river system, one of the most biologically diverse spots in the country, prized by scientists for its concentration of endangered species. It will be interesting to see who ultimately ends up paying for the cleanup and the repercussions that will or wont arise from the spill.

Estimation of leakage amounted  at least 338,000 gallons

  1. I think this is bigger than many people make it out to be. The article states, "The fumes from the spill are so volatile, Crawford said, that airspace above it has been closed, and roads in every direction are blocked." What does this imply for our water supply granted there is no new water? What about the air?

    1. I agree its a bigger problem than the media at least seems to think, but sadly we wont be able to see the true repercussions of the incident until down the road. Hopefully they wont be to major but I would say experience and intelligence of similar events would tell you that there are going to be significant issues that arise in the area due to this.

  2. Kevin,
This is troubling on several levels. First, that it took so long to respond after they smelled the gasoline vapors and then there did not seem to be any detailed emergency plan or contingent plan. Also, this is an ideal target now for terrorists. Last, I wish the response time had been the same as the time it took for gasoline prices at the pump to rise.

    1. That is true, it seemed like on the outside at least that they were just lackadaisical with the response and really had nothing planned before like you said. You would figure something like this would have triggered an immediate response and a "fix" could have occurred a lot quicker than it has especially considering the importance of the line.
